About Ben

From All Music Guide:

Though singer/songwriter Ben Godwin spent the early part of his career playing in hard rock bands in Glasgow, Scotland, he eventually decided that the acoustic anti-folk format was how he wanted to display himself and his craft. In 2002 he released the EP Four Songs, followed by =shinyshiny= in 2004 and Lighter Than the Atom in 2005. That same year, Godwin decided to move to New York City, where, in addition to writing songs, performing, and producing albums for others, he worked at LIFEbeat, a non-profit that promoted HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness through music. In 2007, inspired by the sights and sounds of the city as well as by singers like Tom Waits and Jeff Buckley, Godwin released his full-length debut, Skin and Bone, on his own label, Karmafarm.

That was 2007, and apart from finding time to co-produce the new Costello album, 2008 has mostly been about transition: becoming a father, and moving back to the UK (along with all the complicated stuff that both of those things create.)

Stuff the AMG didn’t mention- a series of collaborations with NYC antifolkers (I was always more into the community than the house style) and a long history of producing for all sorts of artists as diverse as Menlo Park and Christa Couture. I love sealing myself into a studio and emerging blinking into the light with a sweaty fistful of new recordings.

Right now I’m working on the first of a series of EPs. They’ll be released through this site, maybe exclusively. They’ll be relentlessly collaborative and explorative. Some of the songs will be mine and some will not. Some of them will sound like the records and some will be their own mutant creatures.

Oh, and sod that acoustic stuff- I’ve gone electric. =)
