London native Ben Godwin's got the voice of a New Orleans born Broadway show stopper. Supported by the piano skills of virtuoso Dan Costello, Godwin's new album 'Skin and Bone' is a fantastic foray into New York's steamy underbelly. Like a burlesque show meeting a lounge act in a dark alley to get freaky, Godwin's voice rises and falls with such passionate howling and growling in songs like 'Drinking Gasoline' and 'Castaway' that you're going to be putting this album on for wild after parties galore. Songs lyrics drift from love to longing, sorrow to raised eyebrow sarcasm.
There's a dirty, grungy undertone to this album —a mile-wide dark streak with elements of bluegrass finger picking on the steel guitar, pounded piano chords, and that stomping kick drum sound. Fans of Dark Cabaret (Nick Cave, The Dresden Dolls) should find 'Skin and Bone' intriguing, especially 'Outsize Shoes' and 'New World City', but the regular drunken piano lounge pounders are going to be satisfied as well. Those of us lucky enough to be able to wander over to NYC can catch a show or five can find Ben playing out with the Antifolk crowd. Silverfish Magazine |
